Bio
Alexander Luthor (aka Lex, and named after Alexander the Great) was the only son of wealthy socialites Lionel and Leticia Luthor, who had gained their wealth through various business ventures and wise investments. He spent most of his youth travelling the world. As a child, he showed a prodigious talent for math and science, displaying genius-level aptitude. Lionel was a demanding and domineering father who was never satisfied with young Lex's efforts, always pointing out how he could do better. Being a self-made man who had gotten where he was without benefit of anything beyond a high school education, he never understood Lex's interest and fascination in science and math, and actively tried to discourage it at every turn. Lex's mother Leticia would spend time with him and actually show him some love, provided the other socialites weren't in attendance, which was a rare occurrence. As a result, he learned to fend for himself and developed the desire to always seek to be the best at whatever he did. He often won awards in science- and math-related events, awards that would lose their shine when his father refused to acknowledge them.
During the latter part of his teen age years, he would visit relatives in Smallville and help to run the family fertilizer plant as a method of learning how to run a business, with the goal of one day taking over the family business. There, he would meet and befriend Clark Kent, a chance meeting that would blossom into a close friendship and would eventually sour, turning the two men into perpetual enemies. His youth was spent "being a burden to my father and a decorative object for my mother's arm", as he would one day confess to a young Clark as they were hanging out at a popular local spot that teens loved to congregate at.
One summer spent in Smallville, Lex started working on building his own labratory, using an old barn on a piece of land his family owned, trying to keep it a secret. He equipped it with the best equipment he could get his hands on (admittedly not the best, in some cases), with goals that were noble with an eye towards improving living conditions on earth for all people. During that time, he managed to discover how to clone farm animals as a means of increasing food availability. After solving a particularly hard equation he had been struggling with for some time, he decided to go out and celebrate. He went out in his Porsche and had a few celebratory drinks, and on the way back to his makeshift lab, he ended up losing control of his vehicle and crashing into Clark Kent. Drunk and in a panic, he couldn't free himself from his car, and the dashboard had actually pinned him in. Clark rescued him and from that point, a bond formed between them and they became fast friends.
However, fragmented memories of that night would often haunt him and he could never seem explain how he managed to to suffer injuries (however minor), but Clark seemed to have been just fine, even though he was sure that he had hit Clark head on. As time went on, he noticed more and more that Clark seemed to be some how different from everyone else, though it was nothing so obvious, as it seemed no one else was noticing. During this time, he took a trip to various farm fields collecting samples and came across a strange object that had become slightly unearthed by his tripping on its edge. Though he had no way of knowing, what he'd found was part of the debris that had occurred from Clark's crashed pod. Unearthing it and realizing that he had found something extraordinary, he quickly smuggled it back to his private lab. Over time, his exposure to the object seemed to have a positive effect: he became stronger, more alert, faster, and even smarter than he already was.
As time went on, he became more and more fascinated with Clark and his abilities, even to the point of desiring those abilities for himself. During a confrontation with Clark one night in his labs, he tried to get Clark to tell him what he was and how he could be the same. Clark decided to walk out, but Lex refused, attacking him. During the fight, two things would happen that would have future consequences: the lab would be destroyed when Clark, still unused to his level of strength, used more than enough to stop it, and he would leave behind some blood that Lex was able to save before the whole barn burned down. This incident caused Lex to leave Smallville under a cloud of shame so great, that it practically broke him mentally.
For a long time after that, Lex dropped out of contact with everyone and out of the public spotlight. During the time of his disappearance, his parents would die in a mysterious car crash and control and ownership of LexCorp passed quietly from father to son. Only recently has he come back out into the public eye with some recent inventions that are turning out to be almost miraculous in their ability to improve the quality of life for all people, including the poor. This Lex seems to be quite a philanthropist, his intense desire for knowledge and power seemingly tamed. In addition, he seems to be making a concerted effort to make amends with Clark Kent, now a reporter with the Daily Planet, which Lex owns unbeknownst to anyone else. And also unknown to anyone else, he knows that Clark and Superman are one and the same person, though for reasons of his own, he keeps it to himself.
