The setting for Ultimate DC is three years from the start of the varied careers, both heroic and criminal, of the denizens of the DC universe. Just long enough to establish presences, to begin legends, but early enough that the future is unwritten and anything can happen. As of the start of Ultimate DC, things are just getting started.
All of this is inspired by a "What If" article that appeared in Wizard magazine, that asked "what if DC did their own version of the Marvel Ultimate titles?"
For those who aren't familiar with the concept of Marvel's Ultimate titles, here is a quote from the Marvel Ultimate wikipedia entry:
One of the largest issues with getting comic role play set up is getting everyone on the same page, especially when the comic characters being played have their own long and convoluted histories (up to 80 years, in some cases). The potential also exists for one group of people to be playing in one part of the time line, while the other group is in a completely different portion of the time line in which the events in the other group may or may not have happened, making interactive role play between the groups difficult and confusing at best. And speaking of decades long histories, sometimes that can just be daunting enough for players to have to wade through.
So, Ultimate DC is a virtual reset of sorts. Here, you can take familiar and beloved DC characters and re-imagine and update them for modern role play, take them in familiar directions, or veer off onto the road less traveled. Here, their spirits remain the same, but their futures have yet to be written.
Welcome to Ultimate DC.

Ultimate Marvel is an imprint of comic books published by Marvel Comics, featuring re-imagined and updated versions of the company's most popular superhero characters, including Iron Man, Spider-Man, the Hulk, Thor, Daredevil, the X-Men, the Avengers, and the Fantastic Four. The characters have new origins, freeing them from the sometimes convoluted back-histories of the original versions which were thought to turn off new readers unfamiliar with their extensive histories. The universe has been designated as "Earth-1610" within the Marvel Multiverse, which comprises an infinite number of alternate universes.
